In 2016, eight-year-old Daniel Novikov stepped onto the America’s Got Talent stage with a striking blonde woman at his side. At first glance, the audience likely assumed they were watching an ordinary dance duo. Very quickly, that impression changed.
The woman was Alla Novikova, Daniel’s mother and a seasoned ballroom professional. She began dancing at the age of nine in Saratov, Russia, and went on to build an impressive career as a competitor, instructor, coach, and judge. Later, she moved to California with her husband, Alex Novikov, who also worked as a professional ballroom dancer.
Daniel grew up immersed in that world. He often accompanied his mother while she taught students, and ballroom dance became part of his everyday life. After asking Alla to train him, he started practicing seriously and soon revealed a natural gift for performance.
Key Insight: By the time he reached the AGT stage, Daniel was already far from a beginner. He had earned youth titles and had also appeared on PBS’s America’s Ballroom Challenge.
For their audition, Alla and Daniel danced to Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger.” The routine was lively, playful, and packed with precise ballroom technique. Daniel’s poise immediately caught attention. He smiled easily, connected with the crowd, and moved with surprising ease for someone so young.
The judges were equally taken aback when they realized Alla was Daniel’s mother. Daniel explained that many people found their partnership unusual, but the two of them worked together naturally and effectively.

Once the music started, their connection became unmistakable. Daniel’s youthful spark blended with Alla’s polished experience, and the result was a routine that felt both refined and entertaining.
The crowd reacted with strong applause, and the judges — Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B, and Howie Mandel — all voted yes. That decision moved the pair into the next stage of the competition.
- Judge Cuts: They returned with Pitbull’s “Fireball” and impressed again.
- Live shows: Their strong reception earned them a place on the bigger stage.
- Quarterfinals: They performed DNCE’s “Cake by the Ocean” alongside additional dancers.
Their run ended in the Quarterfinals, as they did not gather enough audience support to move on to the semifinals. Even so, Daniel’s ballroom path was only beginning.
After America’s Got Talent, he kept competing and reached a major new achievement. In 2018, Daniel and his partner Mishella Vishnevskiy became the first American couple to win the Under-12 Latin division at the prestigious Blackpool Dance Festival.
His television exposure did not stop there. Daniel also appeared with Mishella on NBC’s World of Dance, giving him another national platform to showcase his skill.
Meanwhile, Alla continued working as a teacher and coach. Together with Alex, she founded Edelweiss Premier Ballroom in San Dimas, California. The family remained closely connected to dance in both life and work.
The Novikov name later returned to America’s Got Talent when Daniel’s younger siblings, Michael and Angelina Novikov, appeared on Season 16. That appearance showed that dance remained a shared family tradition.
Looking back, Daniel and Alla’s audition represented more than a child’s impressive stage moment. It reflected the power of early exposure, steady discipline, and a parent willing to pass on her craft. Their AGT journey stopped in the Quarterfinals, but Daniel’s achievements in ballroom dancing continued to grow, and his most important successes still lay ahead.
